Girls Get Equal: Preventing Child Early and Forced Marriage

Summary of the project: BEE-Group has been implementing Girls Get Equal; preventing child, early and forced marriage project partnership with Plan International Nepal funding support of NORAD through the Plan International Norway. The project aims to reduce the prevalence of Child Early and Forced Marriage. The major outcomes are as follows.

OUTCOME 1: KEEP GIRLS IN SCHOOL

 

Strategic approach: Addressing factors in the school environment that lead to girls dropping out (code of conduct, child protection and inclusive classroom management, pedagogy, menstrual hygiene issues, inclusive WASH facilities). Increase Sexual and Reproductive Health Right knowledge to adolescent in and out of the school.

OUTCOME 2: EDUCATION TO INCREASE KNOWLEDGE ON SEXUAL REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH RIGHTS AMONG ADOLESCENTS

Strategic approach: To reduce incidents of child and teenage pregnancy that causes girls to drop out of education, knowledge on Sexual Reproductive Health and Rights are given to adolescents in or out of school, according to the context. For countries where traditional actors are active in giving knowledge related to sexual practice and behaviours, the program will increase the knowledge and improve practices of these actors.

OUTCOME 3: EDUCATION TO INCREASE GIRLS' ECONOMIC EMPOWERMENT

Strategic approach: Focus on increasing economic empowerment of girls, which have double effects, both in reducing poverty and increasing girls' control over decisions on their lives.  Education is geared towards employment and income opportunity with emphasis on good market analysis and collaboration with private sector.

OUTCOME 4: NORM, ATTITUDE CHANGE

Strategic approach: Two-pronged approach to change discriminatory norm. One is to work with gate-keepers and society's norm in general; the other is to empower children, adolescent and youth (CAYs) to be change agents towards gender equality and child rights.

OUTCOME 5: POLICY FRAME WORK AND CIVIL SOCIETY STRENGTHENING

Strategic approach: Working with duty bearers for better policies and more importantly better implementation. We see civil society as an important actor in advocating for better policy and implementations therefore strengthen civil society's ability will be geared towards capacity to do advocacy, alliance building. Civil societies own governance is important to strengthen credibility and legitimacy to be able to advocate with strength.  Youth movement building is part of civil society strengthening.
